The USS New York leading a convoy at Hampton roads

The battleship USS New York served in both World War I and World War II. The USS New York was most active during World War II, were despite her aging status, she took part in the Atlantic convoys before sailing to the pacific were she fought battles at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

After the war the USS New York served as a target ship for the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll were she survived two atomic blasts, before finally being sunk as an artificial reef in 1948.

He is most noted however for achievements in the commercialisation of aeronautics. Built for the US navy by the Zeppelin factory it served as an experimental, observational and training facility for the navy, eventually logging 172,400 nautical miles of travel. Bernetta Adams Miller (1884-1972), pioneering aviatrix, flying the Moisant-Blériot monoplane from the Moisant Aviation School in Mineola, Long Island sometime around 1912. Test pilot for the Moisant Aviation School, she served on the front in World War I as a volunteer for the Women's Overseas Service League Infantry Division and then the YMCA were she delivered food to the troops, frequently under fire.
She was wounded at least once, but remained at the front through the Argonne offensive and to the end of the war. In 1919 she was awarded the Croix De Guerre by the French government.
From 1941 to 1948 she worked at the The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Her duties, as first secretary to the director of the Institute, meant she was responsible for keeping visitors from disturbing Albert Einstein.

Peter Henry Emerson (1856–1936) was a British doctor and photographer active in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Most famous for his naturalistic photographs of life on the Norfolk Broads in East Anglia, Britain.

Erected in 1904 on the west side of Broadway between 44th and 45th Streets the Astor Hotel was touted as a successor to the Waldorf-Astoria, with ornate rooms and a grand roof terrace it was well placed to take advantage of the emerging theatre district of Broadway. Sadly the hotel was demolished in 1967 to make way for the 54-storey skyscraper One Astor Plaza.

The American Red Cross motor corps was first organised by Florence Jaffray Harriman. The motor corps has about 45 members (Mostly made up of women of independent means). It was based at a garage at Sixteenth and M streets in Washington D.C.
The War and Navy department primarily used the service to transport war workers who had fallen sick, although in most cases it dealt with those suffering from the influenza pandemic of 1918.

A view through the lock gates of the panama canal zone, during construction, before the gates were placed. If you look closely at the central trackway, in the centre of the picture, you can see a figure walking down the canal bed. This gives a good idea of the original size and depth of the canal.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle was published between 1841 and 1955 in Brooklyn, New York City. Among the Eagle’s many distinguished editors were Walt Whitman, Thomas Kinsella, St. Clair McKelway, Cleveland Rogers, Frank D. Schroth, and Charles Montgomery Skinner.

The Brooklyn Daily Bulletin took over the original Eagle moniker in 1955 when the original paper went under after a prolonged strike by The Newspaper Guild. In 1996 it merged with a newly revived Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and now publishes a morning paper five days a week under the Brooklyn Daily Eagle name.

Pioneering film actress Mary Pickford (1892-1979), born Gladys Louise Smith, she went on to become on of the pioneers of early film production becoming both a film producer, founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and co founder, along with D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks of United Artists.
